Kendo practitioners will learn the way of Japanese fencing by using bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armor (bōgu) to have full contact training and matches. Users will also learn the traditional form (kata). Kendo ultimately combines both martial arts and sports activities together.

Kendo practitioners have the opportunity to compete at the SA State kendo Championships, new Members Taikai, Victorian Kendo Championships and the UniSport Nationals.

In order to join our regular Kendo trainings, you will need to complete our 8 week beginners course. This is generally held in April through to June. Please check our beginnings course page for further details.

Flinders Kendo is dedicated to maintaining a welcoming and healthy environment which we believe leads to results on both a personal and club-wide level. This is shown in our consistent and continued results at competitions.

Other than the competitive aspect of kendo, we pride ourselves on how our members conduct themselves and develop in and out of the club.

The word kendo literally means 'The Way of the Sword' (ken: sword + do: way), and can best be described as Japanese Fencing. Kendo's origins are most closely associated with the feudal Japanese Samurai and many protocols within today's dojos still reflect this cultural tradition. Kendo has now become a popular sport form that is suitable for both men and women of all ages, who practice and compete together. The Concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the katana (Japanese sword).

Situated on 86 acres just west of Murray Bridge we are fortunate to be located in an area which has been zoned recreational. With a Motocross circuit some 3-4 kms to the east and an open range zoo to the north west the rest is very much open land. All this means that there is little likelihood of us being squeezed out by housing developments in the near future giving us a long term security of our flying venue.

Since taking over the field in 1994 AMA has made an enormous number of improvements to the property some of which are the bitumen strip, new clubhouse, a six berth toilet with shower facilities, children's compound with shelters and playground, a shaded pit area, lawn irrigation and an international standard control line circle.

Concorde Model Flying Club

Concorde Model Flying Club

by , in Local Business or Place , April 21, 2023

For a few years the Concorde Model Flying club had no base to call there own, club members became associated members of other clubs to keep flying and in touch with the social aspect of the hobby.

Made worse was the fact that the old field was packed up into a shipping container, which was broken into.

The club lost many things including a tractor used for land maintenance.

However, the lights have shone favourably at last and Concorde now has a parchment of land to call Home. The shade cloth is up. The runway is levelled the car park is marked. Everything is almost set to go with a brand new field for the club.

The property was found in the spring of 2016, and negotiations with the owner began to put the property up for sale. The owner accepted in the summer of 2017 and the application to purchase was put into MAAA in Mid-Autumn. In late August MAAA gave the new field approval and plans were lodged into council in September & by late November the council had granted planning approval. Settlement went through in mid-way through 2018. Once all the formal leases where agreed upon and signed the site changed drastically. With work commencing from the 2nd of November 2018. Since then, the new runway has been cleared and levelled, the pit areas have been given shade, the paving laid down and the roof was put on the club room to keep us all protected from the sun.

Concorde has a run way that runs East – West. Normally that may be a concern for those of you thinking about the winds. But the runway is 40 meters wide by 240 meters long. So any wind direction can be used.  The club does run in the air space shared with Edinburgh Air base and all approvals have been granted.

The new field is hoped to have input from new members for the additional use of space. Ideas include a semi permanent FPV track for quad copters and wings to race around, on-site camping (limited facilities) for event weekends. To name a few.

Now that Concorde has a place to call home, it will be a good time for new members to come into the hobby. With a big push for FPV quads and wings in the community the addition of a dedicated FPV area / track will be a great venue, possibly even for state and AUs wide competitions to be held.

The Club’s first flying site was approved on the 25th April, 1973. The first meeting held at the Morphett Vale High School was conducted on the 14th July, 1975. Skyhawks Aeromodellers Club started up in May 1984, with 4 founding members: Peter Melders (1st.President), Les Bollenhagen, Barry Handley, Keith Bancroft, and soon expanded to about a dozen core members.

The club was first situated at the Craigmore High School. With permission of the school the club flew there for approximately six to twelve months. Then they moved to Karbeethan reserve near Angle Vale and flew there for the next eighteen to twenty four months.

In this time they searched for land in the Playford area and found our current site which is second generation parkland.

The original flying area was on carpet and synthetic grass (from Memorial Drive) at the southern end of the paddock. The club name was created by Russell Bond, a control line stunt pilot who used to fly with us from Craigmore.

We have improved over the years to what we have to-day, with over 70 members, large grassed runway, an undercover area and club room facilities.
