Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, setting a new Olympic record of 90.57 meters. He dominated the competition, leading from the start and throwing the two longest throws of the competition. He didn't need to use his final attempt.
Neeraj Chopra of India made his Olympic debut in Tokyo. He qualified for the final by throwing 86.65 meters in his qualifying group and won the gold medal with a throw of 87.58 meters in his second attempt, becoming the first Indian Olympian to win a gold medal in athletics. Chopra's performance in Tokyo made him the second-best male javelin thrower in the world.
