The Sporting Car Club was founded in 1934, making us the second oldest continually running car club in the World. Our 1,700 members all love cars and taking part in motorsport and motoring events.

Much of what the Sporting Car Club is about is motorsport. We run both circuit and hillclimb events at The Bend Motorsport Park, Mallala Motorsport Park and our very own Collingrove Hillclimb. Members as well as the general public have the opportunity to compete and experience life in motorsport.

The club is extremely proud that Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and Mr Rod Bunten are the Club Patron, continuing the great Club history of patronage by the Govenor of South Australia.

There is so much more to the Sporting Car Club of SA than just conditional registration. In addition to the motorsport benefits and opportunities, members will struggle to find a weekend where nothing is happening.

With the help from our sections, weekends are filled with fun and sociable runs to new and interesting destinations within South Australia. Some of our more notable runs include the famous Climb to the Eagle and Sunseeker!

Our club rooms are also home to the Eric Rainsford Library, the largest automotive library in the southern hemisphere.

Why we teach chess in Schools?

We teach Chess in Schools because we believe it helps academic performance. Chess actually makes kids smarter by teaching the following skills: Focusing, visualizing, thinking ahead, analyzing concretely, and thinking abstractly, planning, juggling multiple considerations simultaneously and last but not least it has great Social Benefits.

We teach chess in ADELAIDE Metro and in SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Country schools. Classes in ADELAIDE Metro are conducted on a weekly basis during school hours, lunch times or after school. The format of our chess club in schools usually involves a 15 minute talk or demonstration at the start of each lesson.

This will focus on a particular theme, tactic, strategy or idea. Children are then encouraged to play monitored games in a tournament setting as well as to play social chess variants. Prizes and certificates are awarded during the year to stimulate further interest and friendly rivalry. Chess sets and clocks are provided by Chess School SA. We teach with a friendly positive manner making learning chess easy and great fun.

All our Coaches have current working with children checks and are covered by public liability insurance. If you would like a chess club started at your school and enjoy thrilling chess experience please contact us for more information. Our mission is to provide chess products and services to people who play chess and to help them to improve and enjoy the game even more.

South Australian Sled Dog Club

South Australian Sled Dog Club

by , in Local Business or Place , April 26, 2023

Think you need snow to sled?? Well you don't! The SASDC holds events for those who want to have fun with their dog(s) in dryland sledding, a term used to describe sledding without snow.

Want to try something different with your dog and meet some great people? Dryland sledding is for all medium-large dog breeds that love to run. And cani-cross (cross country running with your dog) is for all sized dogs.

Sledding is all about working with your dog as a team to get across the finish line, having fun and experiencing something different.

Upon coming to an event you'll be provided with a run down of the rules and track etiquette. Along with being provided a sledding harness for your dog (and bungee line to attach your dog to the scooter) you'll also be lent a scooter to use on the day. All you need to bring is a helmet, running shoes, water, towel or two (as it can get a bit muddy sometimes) and a sense of adventure.

The races are held in the forest at either Mount Crawford or Kuitpo in the winter months, as we only run under 15 degrees (hotter and dogs can overheat). The events go over the weekend and are held in two heats (you don't have to go to both) in the mornings (one in the afternoon) so that it's nice and cold.

Camping is available for the Friday and Saturday nights and is recommended to get to know the sled dog community, have a laugh and get to know new people and learn some inside tips and tricks.

Facilities are limited and you'll need to bring everything with you from sleeping to cooking, and take everything with you so all rubbish, there will be portable toilets for use.

Dogs must be social and you must have effective control over your dog at all times. No experience is needed, all equipment is provided.

Don't miss our Sprint race (held at the beginning of the year) to test it out.

Our club is based at Aquatic Reserve, Bower Road, West Lakes, South Australia. Racing is conducted at this venue, along with the Ramsay Rowing Course, West Lakes and on the Torrens River in the city.  Men and Women welcome including those over 50.

Training
Training is conducted at Aquatic Reserve, corner of Bower Road and Old Port Road (enter from Bower Road). Parking is available.

We train on :
Saturday mornings at 8.45 am (on the water at 9 am)
Mondays and Wednesdays at 5.45 pm (on the water at 6 pm).

The boats are provided by Dragonboat SA (DBSA) and the club provides paddles. Wear clothes which are comfortable (eg shorts, ¾ pants, tshirt) - you may get a bit wet! Also your feet will get wet so wet shoes, crocs or thongs are needed. Bring a bottle of water which you can take out in the boat and please wear sunscreen as appropriate. A club locker is available to store your car keys and valuables while you are out on the water. However we do not recommend bringing anything valuable to training.

Insurance
You will be covered by Dragonboat SA (DBSA) insurance. Buoyancy vests are also available if you prefer to wear one in the boat. They are mandatory when on the Port or Torrens Rivers and if training in the dark at West Lakes.

Racing
Waiwilta may not enter every regatta in the season, but usually participates in 4/6 including the state championships held around the end of March, beginning of April each year. Races are for crews of 20 or 10 with distances generally 200 or 500 metres. There is one long distance race (around Delfin Island approximately 7 klms) held each year. It is not a requirement that you participate in racing. Regattas are held at the Torrens River (Elder Park), Aquatic Reserve and the Rowing SA rowing course in Military Road.

Social
During the year the club conducts social functions, with celebration of Chinese New Year, Christmas and end of season as a minimum. In addition members go for coffee after training every Saturday.

Outrigger Canoeing
The club owns an OC6 (six person outrigger) which is stored at the Girl Guides premises at Snowdens Beach, Port River. The outrigger is taken out from time to time and provides experience in outrigger canoeing, cross training and you will have the bonus that you will probably see some dolphins! You will need to wear “boat” shoes when participating in outrigging on the Port River. Buoyancy vests also need to be worn, these will be provided by the club.
