Our club is based at Aquatic Reserve, Bower Road, West Lakes, South Australia. Racing is conducted at this venue, along with the Ramsay Rowing Course, West Lakes and on the Torrens River in the city. Men and Women welcome including those over 50.
Training
Training is conducted at Aquatic Reserve, corner of Bower Road and Old Port Road (enter from Bower Road). Parking is available.
We train on :
Saturday mornings at 8.45 am (on the water at 9 am)
Mondays and Wednesdays at 5.45 pm (on the water at 6 pm).
The boats are provided by Dragonboat SA (DBSA) and the club provides paddles. Wear clothes which are comfortable (eg shorts, ¾ pants, tshirt) - you may get a bit wet! Also your feet will get wet so wet shoes, crocs or thongs are needed. Bring a bottle of water which you can take out in the boat and please wear sunscreen as appropriate. A club locker is available to store your car keys and valuables while you are out on the water. However we do not recommend bringing anything valuable to training.
Insurance
You will be covered by Dragonboat SA (DBSA) insurance. Buoyancy vests are also available if you prefer to wear one in the boat. They are mandatory when on the Port or Torrens Rivers and if training in the dark at West Lakes.
Racing
Waiwilta may not enter every regatta in the season, but usually participates in 4/6 including the state championships held around the end of March, beginning of April each year. Races are for crews of 20 or 10 with distances generally 200 or 500 metres. There is one long distance race (around Delfin Island approximately 7 klms) held each year. It is not a requirement that you participate in racing. Regattas are held at the Torrens River (Elder Park), Aquatic Reserve and the Rowing SA rowing course in Military Road.
Social
During the year the club conducts social functions, with celebration of Chinese New Year, Christmas and end of season as a minimum. In addition members go for coffee after training every Saturday.
Outrigger Canoeing
The club owns an OC6 (six person outrigger) which is stored at the Girl Guides premises at Snowdens Beach, Port River. The outrigger is taken out from time to time and provides experience in outrigger canoeing, cross training and you will have the bonus that you will probably see some dolphins! You will need to wear “boat” shoes when participating in outrigging on the Port River. Buoyancy vests also need to be worn, these will be provided by the club.
