The “Original” Taekwon-Do was the Korean Martial Art of Self

Defense that first applied the name Taekwon-Do to the system that

was being developed in the Korean Military by Gen. Choi and the

soldiers under his command. They conceived of the name in 1954

and received approval from the Korean President in 1955. They

continuously applied the name Taekwon-Do from this time period.

The other styles of Tae Kwon Do came to apply the name to their

systems or groups years later. These Original Taekwon-Do

Instructors in the Military began to diffuse Taekwon-Do around the

world, starting in 1959. When the ITF was formed in 1966 they

continued this dissemination. The WTF was formed in 1973.

PURPOSE: It is hoped that information provided herein can help

educate the masses about the true history of how, where and when

Tae Kwon Do came to be, along with crediting the many who were

instrumental in not only creating Korea’s greatest gift, but sharing it

with the world. It is time to dispel the myth that Tae Kwon Do is

2,000 years old! Hopefully when better informed, Tae Kwon Do

students will come to realize that we have much more in common,

then that which separates us. We encourage and indeed request, as

well as need comments and other submissions to help explain the

historical development. However under no circumstances will any

information be allowed unless it conforms to the Tenets of Taekwon-

Do!
