Everyone wants to know the secret technique that helps pros and experts get to where they are, and that’s perfectly natural! There are many different ways you can get better at skateboarding but, of course, some are better than others, and that’s what we’re here to discuss today.

In my experience, the one secret technique that few people will actually tell you is to just put the time and effort in, there is usually no way to avoid the hard work! At the same time though, you have to make sure your hard work isn’t going to waste, and that’s what the secret techniques we have for you will help with. So, let’s get started!

Balancing

Stand on the skateboard with both feet, using your toes to hold onto the front trucks and your heels to hold onto the back trucks. Try to keep your balance as you shift your weight from one foot to the other.

Good technique is key to success in skateboarding. Pay attention to how your body is positioned on the skateboard and how you are using your feet and weight to control the board.

Pushing off

This is an underrated skill, pushing off defines your starting velocity and plays a big role in how fast you can accelerate, both of which are important for progressing towards advanced mechanics. To start, place one foot on the board and push off with the other foot to propel the skateboard forward. As you gain more control, you can try pushing off with the back foot to go faster.

Turning practice

To turn, you will need to shift your weight onto one foot and use the other foot to steer the skateboard. You can use the front trucks to steer the skateboard by leaning your body in the direction you want to go. The more you skate, the more comfortable and confident you will become. Set aside time each day or week to practice and try new things.

Stopping is important, too!

To stop, you can simply put one foot on the ground or use the heel of your skateboarding foot to slow down and come to a stop. However, it’s rarely just that simple. Stopping is a skill on its own, and learning how to stop quickly, especially to avoid an incident, is a skill that comes with hours and hours of practice and could be the difference between a close call and an injury!

The Most Important Secret

Now when I say secret, I don’t mean this necessarily with skateboarding, since this technique will help you no matter what you’re doing or where you are in life. The technique in question is called the ladder technique, which involves starting small and working your way up the way you would on the steps of a ladder! In the context of skateboarding, this means that you shouldn’t try to tackle complicated tricks right away; start with basic maneuvers and gradually build up to more advanced tricks.
