A year and an enormous amount of trash talk later, there still wasn’t much separating Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
The middleweight rivals went back and forth in another very competitive fight Saturday night that thrilled a capacity crowd of 21,965 at T-Mobile Arena. When their action-packed, 12-round rematch ended, Alvarez had exacted his revenge against Golovkin in the main event of HBO’s four-fight pay-per-view broadcast.
The Mexican icon won a majority decision to deal Kazakhstan’s Golovkin the first defeat of his 12-year professional career.
Judge Glenn Feldman had it even (114-114), but he was overruled by judges Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld. Moretti and Weisfeld each scored this fantastic fight 115-113 for Alvarez, who redeemed himself following a performance-enhancing drug scandal that hurt his career earlier this year.
The 28-year-old Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), who was a slight underdog entering their rematch (+160/-180), won the WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight titles from Golovkin and ended the longest championship reign in boxing. The newly crowned champion also prevented Golovkin from breaking Bernard Hopkins’ record for consecutive middleweight title defenses.
The 36-year-old Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) had made 20 straight defenses of the WBA championship he won in August 2010. Hopkins, a partner in the company that promotes Alvarez, defended the IBF middleweight title 20 straight times from 1996-2005.
“I showed my victory with facts,” Alvarez said through a translator. “He was the one who was backing up. I feel satisfied because I gave a great fight. It was a clear victory.”
Alvarez hasn’t lost since Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated him by majority decision in their 12-round, 154-pound title fight five years ago at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
It took everything Alvarez had to avoid losing to Golovkin on Saturday night, when Alvarez demonstrated an iron chin and landed hard shots to Golovkin’s head and body throughout the bout.
Golovkin and his trainer, Abel Sanchez, chastised Alvarez for “running” during their first fight. Alvarez didn’t move much in this riveting rematch and regularly brought the fight to the rugged Golovkin.
“We had a great fight, the one we expected the first time around,” Sanchez said. “I had it close going into the 12th round. We had good judges, who saw it from different angles. I can’t complain about the decision, but it’s close enough to warrant a third fight. Canelo fought a great fight. Congratulations.”
Together, Alvarez and Golovkin produced more sustained entertainment in their rematch than during their first fight.
Feldman – who had Alvarez ahead, 78-74, through eight rounds – scored each of the final four rounds for Golovkin to finish with a draw on his card (114-114). Moretti and Weisfeld each scored the 12th round for Alvarez, which gave him the narrow win on each of their cards (115-113).
